Understudy Art Space is a gallery in downtown Denver run by the Denver Theatre District. It fits snuggly against the convention center and the light rail station. The curators specialize in highlighting local artists and giving them the opportunity to completely transform the space. When they approached INCITE to create a show for the gallery, we took the opportunity to explore an idea we had been ruminating for a bit. We created a set for a silent sci-fi movie set on the surface of Neptune. Inspired by retro-futurism and movie production from the early 1900’s, we constructed set pieces out of recycled materials (our favorite), creating methane crystal lanterns, Icy rock formations, and a hot spring geyser. We also utilized a corner of the gallery to build a tunnel people could roll through while gazing into the Neptune sky, which was a visualization created by our friend Adam Stone. We also asked DJ Ultraviolet, a musician and turntablist who scores silent films, to create a sound scape for the gallery inspired by the film “Aelita Queen of Mars”.
