Our friends at the historic Stanley Hotel in Estes Park asked us to help them build a float for the upcoming Pride Parade in Denver, but they wanted it to be reusable for many occasions, as well as durable enough to take on the road, should such an opportunity should arise. What we landed on was a scaled replica of the hotel itself, which could then be decorated as needed based on which event was being celebrated. Lil’ Stanley, as it became known as, ended up being sixteen feet long and five feet tall, complete with balcony railings, front porch, and the iconic ridge turret. The wood construction was scaled directly from the building itself and bolted securely to a trailer to be pulled through the parade. Since we were invited to walk in the parade with the float, we asked drag queen Joanne Fabrics to join us in her best Shining inspired outfit. She (and her “sister”) dressed up like the twins from the movie and really helped to add the final touch for the Pride Parade. Lil’ Stanley is still in use for various events.
